Personal Branding Photography on the South Coast NSW: What to Expect + How to Prepare

If you’ve been thinking about booking a personal branding photoshoot but you’re not quite sure where to start - this is for you.

Most of the women I work with come to me feeling a mix of excited and slightly overwhelmed. They understand the value of having great photos for their business but they’re not exactly sure what that actually looks like or how to make it happen.

And if they’re anything like me and might have trouble clearly visualising* what that looks like, then yes, the thought of booking a shoot is of course overwhelming.

A good thing though?

If you’re already based in the Illawarra and beautiful South Coast of NSW, you already have one huge advantage — a stunning landscape of coastal and hinterland country on your doorstep that becomes an abundant playground for creating natural, story-led brand imagery.

And well, if you’re not a local, it’s only a short return trip from Sydney easily done in a day.

Paired with one of the many photoshoot rentals in the area - if budget allows - it would be hard to not walk away with not just an incredible experience, but also a plethora of breathtakingly beautiful photos and video(here’s a link to some of my FAVE hire locations)

*(to clarify what I mean; As a very visual creative, unless I can clearly visualise something, I find it really hard to take action.)

But first things first..

What Is Personal Branding Photography (And Why It Matters)

Personal branding photography is so much more than just “getting some nice photos” (but I’m pretty sure you’ve clued onto that by now).

But for those who are still wondering…

..It’s about creating a bank of intentional, strategic images that reflect who you are, what you do, and how it feels to work with you. It is also very much about helping you show up as the go-to, stand out expert in your field.

Brand Imagery should:

  • Position you as the ONLY choice for clients

  • Give clients a sense of who you are as a person and humanise your business

  • Help you to connect, build trust and long term relationships

And for all that to happen it is imperative that you feel absolutely comfortable with your photographer - make sure you book the one you “vibe” with the most, despite what their body of work might look like.

And I speak from experience.

8 years ago I booked a photographer for a maternity shoot because I LOVED her work. As would seem the logical way to go for sure.

However, on a few occasions leading up to the shoot, they politely told me it would be ok to go with someone else if the “timing” didn’t work ( I had never once even brought that up) and there was a few other things that I should have picked up on.

They where essentially trying to not have the session with me, for reasons unknown at the time, but looking back, they must have just not wanted to. We never actually spoke on the phone and it was very much a shoot and burn situation (which worked for them!).

The photos were nothing like I had expected - they were technically ok. They just didn’t resemble their portfolio at all and I must admit I was a little disappointed.

So..working with anything less than your ideal photographer (and ideal clients for photographers), can really work against us. I’m not pointing the finger here at all, it was nobody’s fault, and if anything I blame myself! I should have seen the signs but I was 8 months pregnant and just wanted to get some photos other than my own sad bathroom selfies.

But I digress.

Why the South Coast Can Be Perfect for Your Brand Shoot

One of the things I love most about shooting here is the variety.

You can go from beachy or rocky coastal backdrops to charming, tree filled small-town streets in a matter of minutes.

Often one location is enough - I’ve come across locations where the beach is black in one direction and filled with white sand in the other! Then adorned with architecturally designed high end homes across the street nestled around a marina.

This is definitely a vibe and probably not for every business owner, but something like this would be perfect for a creative soul whose business is closely tied to nature and beauty.

The point is, it just means we can easily create a gallery that feels dynamic, without it feeling forced or overly styled. Not every session needs a polished air bnb (although I do get excited whenever I get to work in those).

This area has a plethora of locations fit for any business. Some free and some needing a little investment, like in this article about some of my favorite photoshoot rentals.

What to Expect From a Personal Branding Session

Every photographer works differently, but my approach is designed to feel relaxed, thoughtful and completely tailored to you.

Before your shoot, we’ll go through things like:

  • your brand, your goals, and how you want to show up

  • where you’re currently feeling stuck with your content and identify any gaps

  • the kind of images that will actually support your business

I assume the role of not just brand photographer but also Creative Director to plan out our session and shot list. All approved by you of course.

On the day, it’s not about perfection - it’s about creating space for you to settle in and feel comfortable. Because that’s where the magic happens.

Although I bring our roadmap for the day I also leave room for spontaneous ideas and play - honestly, some of the best images are created in the spur of the moment and I think it’s so important to also let inspiration take over when it hits!

How to Prepare for Your Shoot

Preparation doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

In fact, the more aligned your shoot is with your everyday life and brand, the easier it becomes.

A few simple things to focus on:

  • choosing outfits that feel like you (not a different version of you)

  • thinking about how you’ll use the images (website, socials, launches)

  • keeping things simple rather than overcomplicating every detail

You don’t need to have it all figured out - that’s part of what I guide you through and we’ll discuss every aspect of your session in our strategy call.

This way you’ll feel super supported and confident on the day - which means all you have to do is show up and enjoy!

What Kind of Photos You Actually Need

This is where most people get stuck. Luckily it’s kind of my superpower

After years of working with business owners I've fine tuned my process for figuring this part out quite efficiently.

Every business is different but these are a few common things most clients need:

  • lifestyle images - the ones that are full of personality and show you in your element

  • working shots - illustrating the process behind your mastery

  • detail moments - close ups of important key moments

  • connection-driven portraits - almost a headshot but way more personal

The mix of these shots will vary depending on your business and what the images are for.

Working With a Brand Photographer on the South Coast (or anywhere for that matter)

I touched on this before. Choosing the right photographer isn’t just about liking their images - it’s very much about how they make you feel. Could you see yourself spending time with them? Is is someone you could even see yourself becoming friends with (without actually having too)?

You want someone who:

  • understands your business, listens and offers creative direction

  • can guide you through the process (not just shoot you) and help bring the vision to life

  • creates an experience that feels supportive and ensure you get the exact images you need

I've seen too many branding sessions collect dust on hard drives simply because, although they were beautiful images, they didn’t nail the purpose of the session in the first place.

And that makes me sad!
