What to Expect From a Personal Branding Photoshoot (Start to Finish)
Booking a personal branding shoot is one thing.
Knowing what it will actually feel like to go through the process is something else entirely.
For most of my clients, this is where they get stuck the most. Not in whether they need the photos but in the unknowns around the experience itself.
“Will I feel petrified the whole way through? Will I do the right thing” and “Will I be the first client whose photos won’t turn out?”.
I pretty much have heard it all after this many years in business and I completely get it.
So I thought I’d walk you through what it’s really like to work together, from that first conversation through to your final gallery.
(Psst..spoiler alert, in case you're wondering, everyone’s photos always turn out. In 15 years I have never had to do a re-shoot. So there’s that.)
First, let’s chat
Everything begins with a discovery call.
This is where I get a feel for your business, your goals, and what you actually need from your imagery - not just visually, but from a marketing perspective as well. I approach every personal branding session from this angle as no one ever “just needs some pretty pictures of themselves”.
Unless of course that’s all you really want, but generally speaking there’s usually a reason you’ve contacted me (or another brand photographer) to book in a session.
At this point I collect as much information as possible just in case you decide to go ahead.
And if you do…
Then I go away and build your shoot direction
After that first call, I spend time properly immersing myself in your brand and business.
Looking at how you show up, who you’re speaking to, and what your content needs to do for you moving forward. If we're shooting for a particular campaign, launch or new service offering, I keep that in mind.
From there, I create a session roadmap - essentially a clear plan for your shoot, including a concept or moodboard that brings everything together complete with visual references of shot ideas.
Not in a rigid or overwhelming way, but in a way that gives us direction.
Although I spearhead the roadmap creation, I welcome any ideas and visual references you may have too. Pinterest your heart out, if that’s your thing, but you can also leave it all to me :)
We refine everything together before the shoot
Before your session, we reconnect for a strategy call where we go through your roadmap together.
This is where everything gets refined - outfits, locations, flow of the day, and how each part of the shoot ties back to your business and your future content.
By the time your shoot comes around, nothing feels rushed or unclear.
You know what you’re bringing, why you’re bringing it, and how it all fits together.
On the day, you’re guided the entire way
This is usually the part clients feel most unsure about but it’s also the part that tends to surprise them the most.
You’re not expected to know what to do in front of the camera.
That’s my role ( and something I’ve become quite known for ).
I guide you through the entire session - how to stand, where to look, how to move and I’ll often show you as well so you’re never left guessing. Our shot list will also play a part here to keep us on track.
Nothing overly posed or forced. Just natural, relaxed direction that works with you, not against you. I direct within your range of motion, incorporating subtle movement and gentle prompts to make you feel at ease.
And yes, I do show you the back of my camera so we can adjust anything amiss in the moment.
We capture more than just “photos”
During your session, we move through a mix of imagery depending on what your brand actually needs.
That might include portraits, more natural lifestyle moments, behind-the-scenes process, or anything specific to your work or offerings.
Everything we capture is intentional. Not just “nice to have”, but designed to support how you show up and market your business afterwards.
After the shoot, you’re still supported
Once your images are ready, you’ll receive a personalized gallery where you can go through and select your final images.
If you’d like a second set of eyes, we can go through that process together - it can be surprisingly helpful when you’re looking at images of yourself since most people become over critical quickly and can lose sight of what’s important ( selecting the best suited images for the business ).
From there, your images are gently and naturally retouched. Nothing overdone, just enough to keep everything feeling polished while still like you.
You’ll also receive access to a client space with resources to help you actually use your images once you have them.
This includes guidance on how to download and store your files properly (something that’s often overlooked), as well as simple ways to start using your images across your website, social media, and marketing.
Because something I’ve noticed over time is that a lot of people receive their photos (and video content) and then aren’t quite sure what to do next.
So this part of the process is there to make sure your content doesn’t just sit in a folder on a hard drive but actually gets used in a way that supports your business.
Ready to take the next step?
If you’re in the process of choosing a brand photographer on the South Coast, Illawarra or even South Sydney, it’s likely you’re not just looking for new images - you’re looking for something that feels considered, aligned, and reflective of where your business is now.
If that’s the case, you can explore more about how I work and what a tailored session involves here:

From there, if it feels like the right fit, you’re very welcome to reach out.
Each session is approached with intention from the outset—so the end result isn’t just a collection of images, but a body of work that supports how you show up over time.
